LIFE ON EARTH A NATURAL HISTORY SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH 9780002199414 Books

I bought this book to replace a copy I had that was water-stained and in very poor condition. As it turned out I foolishly didn't check the dimensions of this edition [sic] and ended up with a far larger sized volume than I really wanted for portability purposes. This is the only thing I was unhappy with.

This is Attenborough at his best and that is superb. Covers the history of life on earth at a level that isn't dumbed down. Many of todays biology/medical books are written for people with a strong background in molecular biology or genetics.

Too bad this book isn't available in a Kindle version.

So for those of us who love a not overly simplified biological account of life's evolution from earth's beginnings to present but went to high school or college in the '50s or early '60s, this book hits the spot. A couple of other books I recommend highly are Bernd Heinrich's Winter World and Summer World which are also written so you don't need a degree in organic chemistry or genetics to understand or enjoy them. Oh, while I'm plugging authors who write about science, try Richard Fortey, especially his book about the museum in London where he spent most of his life studying trilobites.

Maybe I need to go to the Khan Academy but being over 75, my short term retention dooms me to great frustration when I can't recall technical details ten minutes after it all seemed so clear. Just nature's way of telling you your time is almost up.

LIFE ON EARTH A NATURAL HISTORY SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH 9780002199414 Books Reviews

fine
An Essential Read for those interested in Evolution. This book was a hit when it originally came out. The section on Termites is memorable.
Magnificent!
Fabulous book.
This is the very first book that made me really appreciate and love the natural world. I remember the TV series vividly. Fantastic to not honly have teh opportunity to introduce this book to my Son but even better is - he loves it too!
Had to return it because jacket arrived torn.
An excellent book by the much respected Sir David Attenborough, one of the greatest naturalists and documentary producers of our time.

I must admit, I picked up this book thinking I might actually not understand it. I was pleasantly surprised. You do not have to be a scientist or biologist to enjoy this book.

It was a marvellous read from front to back, explaining the scientific theory of how life on Earth came to be; from the very first organisms floating in the ocean to the glorious diversity of species we now see on our Planet. These theories are essentially considered factual, since they are backed with an enormous amount of evidence from around the world.

The book places great emphasis on Biology's overarching theme EVOLUTION.

I would recommend this book to anybody, not just biologists and aspiring naturalists but also to nature lovers and people with an interest in wildlife. I would also recommend it to religious fanatics, since it indirectly disproves the Creationist theory with a vast accumulation of irrefutable evidence.
