I love Lynn Austin and there is a reason her books are 2 or 3 times more expensive than most Christian Historical Romance authors. She is one of my top 5 authors and she is good. Her books are difficult to put down. I didn't think I would like this premise as the heroine is already dating a guy when the book starts and I like to watch romances develop, but this is more about the journey of the character. I have to say this heroine has more of an arc than most of Ms. Austin's characters. She is a completely different person by the end of the book and her journey is quite believable. This is a good story until the end. Ms. Austin rushed the final romance and tied up the loose ends with one scene. I was in it with her for 90% of the book but the ending was rushed and she didn't sell it well. It is a worthy read for 90% though and quite enjoyable until you get to the end. It is certainly worth the money though if you are not one to wait on the library list.Tags : Wonderland Creek [Lynn Austin] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Wonderland Creek Lynn Austin 9780764204982 Books Reviews
Wow - this little book took me completely by surprise. It wasn't what one would normally expect. No simple love story this - with your typical boy meets girl and then after much to-ing and fro-ing finally realize they were destined to be together.
Nope this little tale was a very different beast.
Alice Ripley is doing her dream job - working in a small town as a librarian, and she can't keep her nose out of a book. Even to the point of opening one such book during a funeral she's attending when the eulogies got a little on the dry side. Sadly for her, her then boyfriend Gordin is the undertakers son and he's is less than amused. He decides it's not such a good idea they continue to see each other. On top of that she then discovers she's being made redundant from the library.
This prompts Alice to leave home and head out to visit a fellow librarian in an even more remote part of the country - one Leslie Macdougle Unfortunately for her, the librarian turns out to be a he and none to happy to have her around. That is until the next day when he ends up shot.
Who shot him, why and what the hacks going on keep the pages turning and the head scripting long into the night. This was clever writing and a compelling storyline.
Highly recommended as something different to add to your reading collection.
I just LOVED this book! I cannot say enough good things about it. I have read several of Lynn Austin's book and this is by far my ultimate favorite. Anyone who is an avid reader can relate to the heroine, Alice Ripley, a librarian who lives her entire life vicariously through the characters in the books she reads. From the first chapter when Alice is caught reading at a funeral the book is laugh-out-loud funny. Every character in the book will leave a deep and lasting impression on the reader as Ms. Austin is a master at bringing out the depth and breadth of her characters' personalities. You will see Alice progress from a selfish, spoiled, sheltered pastor's daughter into a young woman who witnesses first hand life's hard realities. And the best part is that you will be chuckling the whole time as you follow her journey through the Kentucky mountains with Mack and Miss Lillie and all the others she meets in Acorn. This novel is an absolute charmer. I chose this book (merely from its description) for my church book club and I have to admit, I got so caught up in the story that I forgot to write down discussion questions! So I had to go back and read it again and I can tell you I enjoyed it just as much the second time through as I did the first!
Alice was a reader and lived her life behind her books. After graduating, her parents encouraged her to get involved with something , so she began working at the library and collected books to take to rural Kentucky , when during the depression, the community was poor and needed assistance in continuing to educate the children and provide for the community. She intended on staying for a couple of weeks in Kentucky . But her aunt and uncle who had dropped her off were delayed in their return and Alice was pushed to discover that there were things she could do that she never thought she could do take care of an elderly lady, ride a horse to deliver books, provide companionship , adjust to life in a poor community with no electricity or running water, and fall in love .
This book started out with a young woman who was such a bookworm that she lived her life through the characters in her books. The Great Depression and subsequent loss of her library job caused her to step out of her comfort zone and volunteer to help in a library in Appalachia. She ended up in an Adventure way beyond anything she could have imagined, reluctantly becoming a packhorse librarian serving feuding back hills families, getting caught up in a murder and hunt for long buried treasure. She no longer had time to read, as she was living an Adventure instead.
How have I missed this one before now? Wonderland Creek is an absolutely delightful story that took me back to the joy I had when I first read through Catherine Marshall's Christy. I always enjoy fish-out-of-water stories, and when Alice Ripley sets foot in Acorn, Kentucky she is definitely feeling out-of-place. The character is a little naive and selfish at first, but it just makes her inner journey that much more powerful. And Lynn Austin is a master of the slow-burn romance. She had me guessing for a long time, which I appreciate. I listened to the audio version and quite enjoyed the narrator's inflections and gentle accents for the various characters.
