The High Lord Black Magician Trilogy Trudi Canavan 9781841493152 Books

This was my least favorite of the series. I hated the ending. The last ~10 pages or so almost completely ruined the series for me. When you read it, you will know exactly what I mean. The event that happened in the very last pages that try to make it "okay" was stupid. I am really angry honestly, I really LOVED this series, and without spoiling anything, I loved the interaction between the main characters, especially in the later half. I'm very upset at the ending though, and not just the event, but everything else considered, I just thought it seemed pointless. There were so many other options (literally even spoken about in the book!!!). The only thing that will allow me to look back on this series with a positive view is to forget the ending... I loved it besides that. It's hard to write a spoiler free review...

The High Lord Black Magician Trilogy Trudi Canavan 9781841493152 Books Reviews

I should have read the reviews! although the book is well written with exiciting ending, I (as were others) extremely disappointed in the ending. why didn't they draw on the power of the dome? why this and why that. it took me a few days to assess the extreme disappointment in this ending. and in reflection found that the second book should have been a clue, a few reviews said it was pointless to focus on D.'s travels. however in the big picture, the author was setting up D's growing understanding of his own latent sexual desires. It was in short, a gay romance story, set in fantasy.
in the third book, the gay lovers are the only ones whose love survives. hmmmm. interesting, very interesting....

this is the only explanation I have for the strange ending of the 3rd book. the ending could have held up the gay relationship AND had the hero live. as it is, the high lord was just the man who gave Her a baby.... really? so the slum girl, (as we are reminded over and over and over)in this series becomes the best of the best.

yeah, I don't like this ending at all. and will more then likely never read her books again.
I just, I can't even talk about it right now...

The ending had me in full on disgusting ugly cry mode and I couldn't control it. Do you know how difficult it is to read when your eyes are spewing tears? Pretty darn hard.

The writing was amazing, the story was action packed and addicting from chapter one until the end. There were a few characters who I wish had done more. One in-particular...

But overall, this is definitely going on my re-read shelf. And now I have to go purchase the other few books in the other series'.
The final book in the trilogy. The High Lord enlists the help of Sonea as the external threat increases. As the story progresses, Sonea realizes that she must decide if she is going to learn black magic. If she learns black magic and it is discovered she will be executed. As the threat continues to grow, what will she decide?

As the invasion of the rogue magician's becomes more of a reality, Sonea may be the only one who can help save the guild.

This story was very enjoyable for a fantasy fan. I recommend the series to others.
Wish you hadn't killed the man Sonea loves. That made me cry and now I know I'll never be able to reread this series. 😭
The Black Magician Trilogy is about the tutoring of a hard-at-heels young girl in the use of magic, and her fight against all her detractors. It is not for YA only, but older people as well. It is a well-written, interesting and enjoyable story. I liked it very much and found myself wishing for a book four at the end because some of the characters really needed a break. Found myself crying in anguish at the end. Readers always have much to say about how a writer should write. I think that is always down to personal taste anyway. But I will say thank you to Ms Canavan for a very good a very good read.
Sonea, the main protagonist, is one of the fiercest female characters I've ever read about. Her transformation throughout the books is so breath-taking. In The Magician's Guild, she's a lowly slum girl who's discovered by the magic guild. She's believed to have great magical potential. However, those in the slum have grown to greatly dislike the magicians because they "purge" slum people once a year.

It takes some time for Sonea to adjust to the Guild life. She's targeted by an adult magician who hates that she has so much potential, even though she's from the slums. Without giving too much away from the first book, things work out in her favor, and she continues to learn how to wield magic within the guild.

In The Novice, Sonea truly shines and begins to own her potential. She's once again targeted, by a magician named Regin. This time by one of the other novices, and she endures months of torment. Regin torments her with the help of his friends, and they do everything they can to make her life hard. Again without giving anything away, she is triumphant.

The Novice is my favorite book because it shows how much Sonea is learning. She's dedicated in her pursuit to get stronger, crafty when faced with adversity, but is endearing in light of her vulnerabilities. She loses a lot of her innocence in the second book, and her fierceness grows.

The High Lord for me was captivating because of the intense battle against the enemy black magicians. She finds an ally in the one person who she would never expect, the High Lord Akkarin. Up until this point, Sonea and those closest to her did not like him. Sonea caught him using forbidden black magic in book one, and since then, Sonea was always wary and angry at him. However, things change drastically in this book between them. I won't say how things arrive to this conclusion, but I will say the blossoming love between Akkarin and Sonea was so unexpected. While I did enjoy seeing their love, specifically Sonea's change of heart, in light of Akkarin's true intentions for wielding black magic, their relationship did seem out of left field. Their relationship and Sonea's emotions for Akkarin arrived way too suddenly to be truly believable to me. We as readers, just spent two books, mostly book two, despising Akkarin because of Sonea's hatred for him. And then, all of a sudden things change between them.

Despite that one gripe, I feel like this is a solid fantasy trilogy. It has all the makings of a great trilogy. I laughed, cried, and screamed at all the right places. All the characters are well developed, as is the world within the books. Sonea lost as much as she gained, and we root for her until the very end. And speaking of endings, it was every bit as shocking as I expected it to be. You will be in for one emotional ride.
