Luke Jordan grew up on a farm in central Minnesota where he spent much of his childhood running around outdoors. His favorite and most inspirational place to visit was the North Shore of Lake Superior. He was awe-struck by the beauty of the region, and soon started venturing out on his own. During his college years he began backpacking and in 2012 he graduated with a natural resources degree and decided to pursue a dream that had been almost three years in the making. With his college years behind him, he was ready to strap on his pack and attempt a grand adventure over the North Country National Scenic Trail. He succeeded, and became the fourth person to successfully thru-hike the trail. Follow along as he traverses this trail of great diversity from the vast plains of North Dakota to the high peaks of the Adirondacks.

If you’ve read Bill Bryson on the Appalachian Trail or Cheryl Strayed on the Pacific Crest Trail, you’ve read polished, literary accounts of hiking one of America’s long trails. Ken Ilgunas’ Trespassing Across America is another version of the genre, with more social and political commentary. This is very different, just the daily journals along America’s longest long trail, the North Country Trail. The NCT is 4,568 miles long, from North Dakota to New York’s border with Vermont, with 1,100 of those miles coming in Michigan. Luke “Strider” Jordan continued a few days into Vermont, where there’s a planned connection between the NCT and the Long Trail. There are also overlaps with the Superior Hiking Trail in Minnesota, a trail he has personal connections with, the Finger Lakes Trail in New York, the Buckeye Trail in Ohio, and some shorter trails. I’ve hiked bits in Minnesota and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, which are lovely; some stretches, especially the longer roadwalks on busy highways, do not sound lovely at all.
The journal format lets you see what it’s really like to hike a trail like this for 200 days. That’s very different from the literary accounts, which are excellent books but which have also been reworked for narrative purposes. This is the raw material.
For that reason, it’s more interesting than I thought it would be. When Strider hikes small-town America, he experiences a lot of trail magic, generous people who open their homes and wallets to him, and who get his stories in return. He gives a lot of media interviews along the way, as publicizing the NCT was one of his motivations. (In fact, he now works for the NCT.)
Strider has since hiked the Great Plains Trail from Texas to Canada, so keep an eye out for the sequel to this book - and for stories of his future adventures.
No points if you can guess what author he read during free moments in camp.

Thru and Back Again A Hiker Journey on the North Country Trail eBook Luke Jordan Reviews
I thought it was a sincere attempt, but the outline is clunky in its journal like form. It might have been better as chunks of sections where highlighted details could have been put in place.
Great to read Luke's story and gain some of his wisdom of the NCT!
It is very descriptive, well written, easy to read and to connect to. Luke Jordan is a physically and mentally strong person we can all learn from.
Loved this book, written in journal log form. I felt like I was hiking with Luke the whole trip! Met this young man- so kind.
The story of Luke Jordan's thru-hike of the entire 4,600 mile North Country Trail is an AMAZING one. Very well-written and full of adventure, this book is a 'must read' for any serious long distance hiker.
Not only does Luke Jordan write a great book, but he's also a great person. I had the privilege of meeting him at last year's North Country Trail annual convention, and we were able to talk strategy for expanding the NCT off road walks. He now works for the NPS and specifically oversees the NCT. Makes this book have alot ood meaning to me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I must say I developed a deep sense of empathy over his constant struggle with the incomplete sections of the trail. Not to mention his avoidance of becoming kibble for the canines. I will say it reads differently from many of the thru hiker tails I've read. This is truly a rewritten trail journal. I felt the personal thank you'd sent out to all of the trail angels and helpers at the end of each description of each interaction was a nice touch.
