I think this novel is a masterpiece of deceptive simplicity. There are these two levels, the everydayness of the action and this symbolic level where everything’s whirling about. And it’s told by a person who’s unaware of the symbolic level so you have to piece it together. And there’s these three characters who are the same but very different, Anna, Freud and Wolf. I think of them standing back to back in a triangle looking out at different views. And Anna is flummoxed and Freud is flummoxed and Wolf is unaware. And Wolf is too similar to Freud so Freud can’t see him clearly because he keeps seeing himself. Brilliant. And Anna is so beautiful the way she's portrayed. And then there’s this heartbreaking scene on the bed with the gun. And the symbolism and the world are all there together in the room. And Wolf has no desire. And Anna needs to be loved. It’s really haunting. As it turns out, Wolf is the young Adolf Hitler before he became famous, but this fact is really tangential to the story. The main thrust of the story is not about the later Hitler. At the end, you find out maybe someone else wrote the story, not Wolf. I had to go back right away and read it again. Anyway I really loved it. It changed the way I think about showing complexity using simple language. I read it a few times. It has a duality, like reading Homer where everyone is sacrificing bulls and running around with spears and at the same time there’s this other level where the Gods are reacting and fighting and intervening. The way it’s written, it invites the reader to play the game of the psychoanalyst. You’re analyzing the various characters with the bits of information you glean, trying to figure out what’s motivating them. But, at the end, you’re left with the impression that the real answer doesn’t lie in this type of analysis at all, that in someway it just traps you in a heuristic circle, because there, in the final pages, is Anna in her old age, the consummate analyst, and she’s forgotten Wolf and everything that happened to her, and at the same time, her experiences with Wolf are clearly still inside her, repressed and rumbling around under that powerful analytical mind of hers. It's a real piece of chamber music.
Its a wonderful book. Beautifully written, compelling and interesting from an historical point of view.
